1. The process begins as the cargo is gathered from the supplier:
After your supplier prepares the cargo with proper packaging and labelling, it's then collected from their facility by the Freight Forwarder and transported to there packing depot. Side note: Customs clearance procedures for exports are conducted to confirm that the goods meet all necessary requirements for leaving the country.
2. Delivered to the packing depot:
At the depot, the LCL cargo is inspected to confirm its contents and condition, a crucial step in ensuring compliance with shipping requirements and regulations. Once inspected, the cargo is re-labelled for quick identification and stored at the depot until it is prepared for loading into the assigned shipping container.
3. The cargo gets packed into a container:
As the vessel's departure is nearing, it's time to pack the goods into a container. The warehouse team works diligently to ensure efficient packing, making the most of available space to ensure your goods travel safely to their destination.
4. The container is taken to the port:
Once the container is packed with all the intended cargo and prepared for transport, the container is picked up from the depot and delivered to the port before the vessel's deadline.
5. Loaded onto a container ship
At the port, once the ship has arrived and it’s container loading time the container is carefully placed onto the intended vessel by a container crane, where it will begin its journey to its destination. Throughout the voyage, the container will be safely secured, ensuring that its contents remain intact and protected.
6. Shipped to it’s destination port
Depending on where you ship from the vessel can take days or months to arrive at the destination port. Some factors to consider that could delay the vessels arrival are port congestion, port strikes and weather conditions.
7. Container unloaded from its vessel
Upon the ship's arrival, all containers on board need to be offloaded using a container crane. This process may take a few days post-arrival for the containers to be unloaded and ready for the trucking team to pick up, as most vessels have thousands of containers to unload. Expert Tip: At this point, your local customs broker should have already processed your documents and pre-cleared your import entry to prevent any delays with your cargo.
8. Container collected from the destination port
Transportation is arranged for the trucking of the container where it is uploaded from the destination port. Depending on what port the container is at it can take a few days to get an available booking slot to uplift the container which can add a delay in receiving your cargo.
9. Container delivered to the unpack depot
The container is then transported to the unpack depot for easy access and unpacking. If the unpack depot receives many containers from the same vessel, the container turnaround time could be significantly longer than anticipated which could add a few days to your cargos journey.
10. Cargo gets unpacked from the container
Once its your containers turn to be unpacked at the depot all the cargo gets inspected by an accredited inspector, to mitigate any potential biosecurity risks to the country. They also check for any external damages on your cargo.
11. The delivery is made to the importer
Once your cargo has been unpacked and is ready at the warehouse, it's delivery time! Your shipment will be picked up from the unpack depot and transported to your specified address.
